Novel food: El pastís de Watchmen

Please scroll down for an English version (not quite a translation) of this post...

Ingredients

3 ous
3 llimones

Coleu-ho.

English version

I work for a comic book publisher, so it's not strange that when I first read about the Novel Food event my mind wandered off to familiar terrain. Having been to the press screening of Watchmen, the adaption to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons glorious graphic novel the day before, the concept of the bleeding smiley, one of the icons of the story, suddenly made itself pretty obvious. As for Watchmen, I don't want to give out much about the story itself. Let me just say it's widely considered the Sistine Chapel of comic books, and for good reasons. To start with, as I mentioned, the script is written by a ZZ Top bearded mystical British lunatic by the name of Alan Moore, who also authored the prodigious V for VendettaWatchmen turned the superhero genre onto its head and drenched it in both poetry and reality while asking some very deep questions about the human condition. As the friend who first gave me the book said to me, lucky those who haven't read it yet, because they are in for some hours of an intellectual and esthetical rollercoaster.  I used a store bought cake -anytime I try to slice a cake I've made myself I end up ruining it- which I filled with lemon curd (made by yours truly) and covered in a cheese-butter icing tinted with yellow food colouring (ditto). I piped some chocolate for the eyes and mouth and spooned some strawberry sauce for the bloodstain/clock arm, and although I too made that myself  if I had to repeat it I would just use store bought jam, as it's probably easier to spread. I would feel quite proud about this cake if it weren't for the fact that after I'd prepared I discovered there were stacks of other Watchmen cakes making the rounds in internet :(((

I t'ha quedat espectacular!! :)

Gemma ha dit...

Doncs jo la trobo super original!
Has anat a veure l'adaptació al cinema?

Sí, he vist l'adaptació...

Dear Mar, I think you should feel proud of your cake, regardless of what others did. Having just watched this video on the NY Times site: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/03/05/movies/20090305-watchmen-feature.html?ex=1252814400&en=28e32a5acc046691&ei=5087&WT.mc_id=MO-D-I-NYT-MOD-MOD-m086-ROS-0309-L3&WT.mc_ev=click
I can now at least say that I saw the smiley. Very interesting post. Thanks for participating in our event.

Mar Calpena ha dit...

Hey, Simona, it's been a pleasure to participate, and I hope to do it again in future editions! I think it's such an incredible idea and I want to thank both you and Lisa for making it a reality.

Mar, thank you so much for taking part in our event. I love your post; I'd been wondering what Watchmen was all about. I think I must read the novel before seeing the movie.

Your cake is so great!

Peter Rozovsky ha dit...

That's quite a cake. Would you mind if I posted a picture of it and a link on my blog? I made some posts about Watchemen a while back, and your pastry would fit nicely.

Thanks.
